Intro to Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz –

Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Barossa Shiraz Australia is a big block buster Shiraz with much robust berry fruit, spices and pepper flavours that linger. Despite its weight, it is very well balanced and a joy to savour.

Full tasting note and wine making –

The Yalumba Octavius 2008 is sourced 59% from Barossa Valley Shiraz and 41% from Eden Valley Shiraz from a number of Yalumba growers. The result is a wine that is dark crimson red in colour with aromas of concentrated plum, clove, dark coffee and chocolate. It hits the mouth with ripe plum and blackberry sweetness and finishes long and stylishly. This wine will continue to improve in the long term.
Though 2008 was a year of climatic extremes, the end result has seen a wonderful year for The Octavius. All parcels of fruit were fermented separately in either open fermenters or potter fermenters. Wild yeasts naturally present on the grape skins were allowed to initiate the fermentation and cultured winery yeasts were then added to complete the fermentation. These ‘wild’ ferments have helped contribute to the individual complexities of the wine, creating richness and fine textures. The wine was matured for 20 Months in 30% new French and American octaves, 24% French Barriques & Hogsheads, American and Hungarian Hogsheads, the balance was in older French, American & Hungarian barrels.

The producer –

The history of Yalumba goes back to 1849 when Samuel Smith set sail with his family for Adelaide and then onto Angaston to work for a fruit grower and where he planted his first vines. In 1852 he returned from the gold fields with enough money to buy additional land and plant more vines. This was the start of Yalumba, a wine producing company that continues to thrive and grow. In 1966 the first vintage of the eponymous wine The Signature Shiraz Cabernet blend was made honouring Samuel Smith at the heart of this family owned company.
In 1985 Robert Hill Smith took over as Managing Director, bought out all the other family shareholders, and insisted that the company major on growing grape varieties matched to terroir for which the company is renowned. In 1998 with the help of Louisa Rose Yalumba launched wines made from Viognier and she has become the world’s most influential Viognier winemaker.
Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, that has made the Australia making it a wine success story.
