Intro to Samuel’s Collection Eden Valley Viognier –

Samuel’s Collection Eden Valley Viognier has intense aromatic musky rose petal notes with a hint of apricot and honeysuckle and a long fresh yet rich luscious fruity taste.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Samuel’s Collection Eden Valley Viognier is pale lemon with green hues, with a funky mix of pretty aromas of white flowers, ginger and jasmine with hints of apricot. The palate is creamy, rich and long with flavours including fresh apricot nectar and almond meal, leading into a succulent mid palate with bright stone fruit flavours and Asian five spice on the finish.
After harvest about 60% of the fruit was gently pressed directly to barrels, the rest to stainless steel tanks. At blending, the barrels of wine that have not made the Virgilius blend, are also included in the assemblage. Fermented & matured for 10 months in older French oak barriques and puncheons (60% of the blend).

The producer –

The history of Yalumba goes back to 1849 when Samuel Smith set sail with his family for Adelaide and then onto Angaston to work for a fruit grower and where he planted his first vines. In 1852 he returned from the gold fields with enough money to buy additional land and plant more vines. This was the start of Yalumba, a wine producing company that continues to thrive and grow. In 1966 the first vintage of the eponymous wine The Signature Shiraz Cabernet blend was made honouring Samuel Smith at the heart of this family owned company.
In 1985 Robert Hill Smith took over as Managing Director, bought out all the other family shareholders, and insisted that the company major on growing grape varieties matched to terroir for which the company is renowned. In 1998 with the help of Louisa Rose Yalumba launched wines made from Viognier and she has become the world’s most influential Viognier winemaker.
Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, that has made the Australia making it a wine success story.
