Intro to Yalumba Antique Muscat –
The Yalumba Antique Muscat from the Barossa Valley South Australia is full of raisiny fruit and the Muscat grape perfume balanced deep spicy flavours that linger.
Full tasting note and wine making –
This luscious dessert wine is deep amber to tawny in colour, with the classic perfumed aroma of the Muscat grape rose petal, ginger and orange peel, overlaid by raisined fruits. The palate has a soft, luscious texture, and is richly flavoured, displaying a balance of fruit and aged characters. The finish is full and rich with raisined fruit cake and spice flavours lingering on the aftertaste after 7 years in used French and American barrels
Yalumba first began making wines at its Angaston winery more than 165 years ago, and the production of fortified wines has long been part of that history. Today, Yalumba maintains its reputation for premium quality fortified wines by occasionally releasing very small parcels of show reserve stocks.
This wine is fermented on skins to soften and release the juice and flavours from the shrivelled grapes and fermentation is arrested by fortification with neutral grape spirit to retain the varietal flavours and liqueur sweetness in the final wine. The wines are then put aside into small oak barrels to mature, producing a complexity of raisined and fruitcake flavours. After many years of maturation, a selection of older and younger wines are judiciously blended to produce a complexity and balance of fruit and aged characters.
The producer –
The history of Yalumba goes back to 1849 when Samuel Smith set sail with his family for Adelaide and then onto Angaston to work for a fruit grower and where he planted his first vines. In 1852 he returned from the gold fields with enough money to buy additional land and plant more vines. This was the start of Yalumba, a wine producing company that continues to thrive and grow. In 1966 the first vintage of the eponymous wine The Signature Shiraz Cabernet blend was made honouring Samuel Smith at the heart of this family owned company.
In 1985 Robert Hill Smith took over as Managing Director, bought out all the other family shareholders, and insisted that the company major on growing grape varieties matched to terroir for which the company is renowned. In 1998 with the help of Louisa Rose Yalumba launched wines made from Viognier and she has become the worlds most influential Viognier winemaker.
Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, that has made the Australia making it a wine success story.
