Intro to Warre’s LBV Port –
Warre’s LBV Port is bottled after 4 years in cask and aged prior to release, it delivers a full, fruity punch that will soften and develop with further ageing.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Warre’s was alone for many years in continuing to make LBV in the same way as it had been made for generations; bottled without any fining or filtration after some 4 years of ageing in cask followed by another 4 years maturation in bottle . This prolonged bottle ageing is crucial to the development of the superb nose and flavour which lend this Port a style and complexity very much akin to that of Vintage Port. Warre’s LBV is generally acknowledged to be the finest of its type.
The producer –
Founded in 1670, Warre’s is the oldest British Port House and has remained a family owned company throughout its long history. The backbone of Warre’s Ports are made at Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhâo valley, and at the historic vineyard of Quinta do Retiro Antigo in the Rio Torto valley.
Recently, the magnificent Quinta da Telhada in the far eastern stretches of the Douro has been acquired for Warre’s and provides some of its finest grapes. The winery at Cavadinha is one of the most specialised small boutique wineries, in the Douro with six state-of-the-art automated lagares. This winery is featured in Hugh Johnson’s World Atlas of Wine. In addition, some of Warre’s finest Ports come from the privately family-owned vineyards of Alvito and Netas.
Drink with –
This wine is superb with cheese, nuts and dried fruits after a meal.
