Intro to Te Mata Elston Chardonnay –

Te Mata Elston Chardonnay from Hawkes Bay has a fresh full and peachy nose. It has an immediate aroma and taste so is not a shy Chardonnay though it is never overblown. On the palate some creamy notes mingle with fresh stone fruit.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Te Mata Elston Chardonnay is like a Hawke’s Bay peach picked fresh from the tree. Intricate aromas of ripe stone fruit, nectarine, lemon zest and honey soften into Crème brûlée, citrus and roast nuts. Crisp Chardonnay fruit balanced against fine, refreshing acidity gives this wine immaculate poise. Te Mata Estate’s leading lady, Elston is Chardonnay royalty.
Each parcel of fruit was gently pressed, cold settled and racked to new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines remained in contact with their yeast lees while undergoing malolactic fermentation. The finest lots were selected for further maturation, spending a total of eleven months in barrel. The finished wine was bottled in March 2016.
Elston is named for Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Charles Darwin’s family. Darwin’s theory of natural selection forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory, the foundation of biology. The wyvern symbol of Elston Hall appears on the label.

The producer –

Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognised wines exclusively from its Hawkes Bay vineyards. Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea Cabernets/Merlots, Bullnose Syrah, Elston Chardonnay, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc and Zara Viognier. In 2012 Te Mata Estate launched Estate Vineyards, a collection sourced exclusively from their own vineyards and blended to represent the best qualities of their variety.
Te Mata Estate is committed to improving its performance in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability through the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme.
