Intro to Taittinger Prelude Grand Cru NV Champagne –
Taittinger Prélude Grand Cru NV Champagne has fine bubbles that form a lasting and delicately creamy mousse and it has a subtle fresh nose. The initial mineral aromas quickly develop into green, floral scents with hints of elderflower and spicy cinnamon overtones. The palate is dominated by intense fresh citrus fruit which then give way to a much fuller, well-bodied and mellow taste with flavours reminiscent of white peaches in syrup. The finish is long, rich and extremely expressive.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Taittinger Prélude Grand Cru NV Champagne is a wonderfully seductive cuvée made solely from fruit grown in Grand Cru classified vineyards. A Champagne with the consistency of a Non-Vintage, but the depth and complexity of a great Vintage. A blend of 50% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs and 50% Pinot Noir from Grand Cru villages in the Montagne de Reims, together with 4 years on its lees produces a wine with the elegant Taittinger style, a creamy mousse, fresh floral aromas and a long finish with touches of ripe orchard fruit. A wine to start off any great occasion.
The blend is made from 50% Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs (including Avize and Le Mesnil sur Oger) and 50% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims area (including Mailly, Ambonnay). It is the speciality of the Grands Crus that bring precise characters to the wine such as its minerality. Grands Crus come exclusively from grapes grown in the 100% rated vineyards of Champagne. There are 17 and they cover approximately 14% of the vineyard’s total surface area.
The producer –
Taittinger remains one of the few Champagne Houses owned and managed by the family named on the label. Its origins date back to 1734 and the Taittinger link was established in 1931 when Pierre Taittinger acquired the House. Today, the Reims it is headed up by Pierre’s grandson, Pierre-Emmanual Taittinger and his son, Clovis and daughter Vitalie both of whom are actively involved in of this Champagne House.
Taittinger’s home is situated above miles of chalk tunnels and cellars that are perfect for the slow ageing process required for great Champagne. The hallmark of the Taittinger Champagnes is the high percentage of Chardonnay used in their winemaking which can be anything from 40% in the Brut Réserve Non Vintage to 100% in the prestigious Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs. This Chardonnay dominance provides for a style of elegance, delicacy and finesse that has earned the House many accolades over the years.
