Intro to Raats Old Vine Chenin Blanc –
Raats Old Vine Chenin Blanc is elegant with aromas of quince, pear and blossom with vibrant flavours of pineapple & spices with a long spicy finish.
Full tasting note and winemaking –
Raats Old Vine Chenin Blanc epitomises the understated elegance of Chenin Blanc. It has a restrained, yet complex aroma of quince, ripe pear, orange blossoms, nettles and spice. On the palate the wine is full of pineapple and lemongrass and the cloves, nutmeg and ginger of the nose follow through against a backdrop of vibrant acidity, ending with a long spicy, limey note.
The grapes are grown in three specific vineyards in Stellenbosch and are an average age of 45 years or older and the soil is derived from natural combination of decomposed Dolomite granite and Table Mountain sandstone.
50% of the wine was fermented and matured in 300 litre French oak barrels to accentuate the soft, luscious flavours; 50% fermented in stainless steel to contribute a crisp acidity and bright citrus flavours. After 9 months, the two components are blended together and left on the lees for a further 2 months before bottling. Fermentation temperature is 18-22°C and 50% of the wine spends nine months in French oak none of which is new.
The producer –
Bruwer Raats has received international and local acclaim during his career as cellar master and winemaker par excellence. Having carved out a reputation as a New World leader in the production of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Bruwer crafts soil specific wines that embody the unique characteristics of the Stellenbosch region: a truly distinctive showcase for South African wine and soil, with a consistency in quality that is unquestionable. The Original Chenin Blanc epitomises the balance between power and elegance while the Family Chenin delivers a refined complexity with firm minerality. The über-elegant and sexy Family Cabernet Franc shows the stunning heights this varietal can attain, while the continued collaboration between Mzokhona Mvemve and Bruwer on their MR de Compostela exceeds even Bruwer’s high expectations; this year being awarded a place in the top 100 South African wines. Mavericks like Bruwer Raats are really forging ahead, producing wines with a real sense of provenance and style.
Drink with –
Pairs well with a variety of foods, but we recommend rich creamy mussels, smoked salmon and white fish with a beurre blanc sauce.
