Intro to Painted Wolf Guillermo Pinotage –

The Painted Wolf Guillermo Pinotage from Swartland South Africa has ripe summer berries and creamy vanilla notes which are the predominant flavours in the complex Pinotage and the small amount of Cabernet added provides some backbone.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Painted Wolf Guillermo Pinotage from Swartland is an intense, rich wine packed with flavours of ripe blueberry and mulberry, exotic spice and creamy vanilla with evident ripe tannins and a long lingering finish. This wine drinks well as a young wine, but will improve gaining additional complexity for at least 6 to 8 years from vintage.
Organically certified Pinotage grapes were sourced from the Kasteelsig vineyard which is owned by Painted Wolf Pack members Billy (Guillermo) and Penny Hughes and these vines are not irrigated. The grapes were hand-picked into small baskets and taken to the cellar where they were hand sorted, destalked and gently crushed. The wine fermented in small open fermentation bins, then pressed and placed in oak barrels to complete alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine matured in a mixture of French, Hungarian and American oak barrels for roughly 12 months, approximately 50% new wood.

The Producer –

Painted Wolf Wines was founded by Jeremy and Emma Borg, drawing inspiration from the African Wild Dog, and to quote them ‘our own Painted Wolf pack is a community of talented individuals who bring the best available grapes, technical and practical skills to Painted wolf, allowing us to craft a range of delicious, authentic satisfying wines’.
Jeremy has over 20 years experience working with wineries in USA, UK and in South Africa and has a keen understanding of both wine making and the market and set out with a fresh and different approach. The goal is to build a community of passionate caring individuals who through grapes and teamwork bring the best available technical and practical skills to Painted Wolf. Jeremy is a visionary, with a burning passion to develop Painted Wolf Wines into an exceptional organisation, true to their mantra ‘Persistently remarkable, remarkably persistent’.
Emma draws on her wide experiences from working in hotel, catering and safari camp management, and collected whilst travelling and working on her adventures in various parts of the world. Having worked as a freelance photographer in the Cape winelands for the past few years, her work has been published in many wine books and publications. She is utilises her photographic and networking skills to tell the Painted Wolf story.
