Intro to Iona Sophie Te’Blanche Sauvignon Blanc
Iona Sophie Te’Blanche Sauvignon Blanc is a delightful aromatic wine with an array of fruity and floral notes.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Iona Sophie Te’Blanche Sauvignon Blanc has floral notes with a complex medley of tropical fruits, mingled with subtle lime and gooseberry undertones. The palate is balanced and rich, showing cut green apples with great minerality and texture. Sophie te’Blanche, a nickname given by those including our workers, who can’t pronounce Sauvignon Blanc, is the inspiration behind this much loved wine, produced from grapes grown by dedicated farmers in Elgin and the Cape South Coast.
The grapes for Sophie Te Blanche are sourced from seven different growers situated in the Cape South Coast region. 71% of the grapes are sourced from Elgin, 19% from Hermanus and 10% from Botriver region.
Grapes were hand harvested and destemmed and the juice settled for 24 hours before being racked and inoculated with selected yeast strains. The wines were kept on the fine lees for four months before being bottled.
The producer –
Iona’s vineyards are located in the Highlands, a unique sub-region of Elgin on the saddle between two peaks, which is virtually exclusive to Iona. The uniquely elegant and mineral driven Sauvignon Blanc grown here in the Highlands is a true benchmark for South Africa and has won Iona many loyal followers from around the world.
Iona is thought to be the coolest vineyard in the Cape, 420m above sea-level, high above the Elgin Valley. An extremely long growing season, harvesting up to 2 months after Stellenbosch, results in diverse, complex flavours and fresh elegant wines. The philosophy at Iona is to make wine that expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking. Everything is done in-house. From the vineyard to the wine distribution, for owners Andrew and Rozy, Iona is the sole source of their focus, passion and great joy.
