Intro to Esk Valley The Terraces –

Esk Valley, The Terraces from Hawkes Bay is widely renowned as one of New Zealand’s greatest reds and is a single vineyard blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it is generous with rich fruit, spices, supple tannins, great concentration, length and elegance.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Esk Valley, The Terraces from Hawkes Bay is a handcrafted wine and true vineyard blend with all harvested fruit being co-fermented in a single open topped fermenter. The wine is deeply coloured and full of primary black fruits including cherry and blackberry. As a young wine, French oak notes complement the fruit, but with time, complexity and vineyard nuances will predominate.
This steep north-west facing vineyard was originally planted in the 1940s and then re-established with its current plantings in 1988. It occupies approximately one hectare and is planted with Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which are harvested and fermented together as a true expression of the vineyard. 2009 is a vintage with a classic feel and will be long-lived.
This wine is a true vineyard blend with the individual plots of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot being harvested and processed together. The grapes were hand harvested, sorted and destemmed to a 70-year-old concrete vat for fermentation. Hand plunging was employed for cap management. The finished wine was aged in new French oak barriques for 18 months and given a light egg white fining prior to bottling.

The producer –

Esk Valley winery is situated in the north of New Zealand’s picturesque Hawkes Bay; the winery sources fruit from Hawkes Bay, including the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels and Marlborough, as both regions consistently produce grapes of an extremely high quality. Esk Valley is a boutique winery, but it is unique in that many of the techniques used to craft its award-winning wines are dictated by the winery itself. The old concrete vats, the layout of the buildings, and the absence of modern technology mean the winemakers at Esk Valley have had to make wine in a simple, honest, hands-on way.

Esk Valley The Terraces Hawkes Bay New Zealand has been described as probably the best red to come out of New Zealand from the Gimblett Gravels area in North Island. It is close to a Bordeaux Blend in style with good fruit and balancing structure and only made in exceptional vintages. Originally terraced in the late 1940s on a steep, north facing hillside beside the winery, ‘The Terraces’ is one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in New Zealand. Esk Valley’s iconic wine, is an ultra-premium wine that is only produced in outstanding vintage years, and the amount made is always very small.
