DeMorgenzon Syrah from Stellenbosch in South Africa is full of dark fruits and peppers on the nose with full vibrant flavours on the palate including some subtle vanilla and cloves from careful oak aging which also makes it smooth and round.

DeMorgenzon Syrah has a rich, berry fruit nose with lots of ripe, red plum and is rich and full in the mouth with tremendous youthful vigour. Layers of berry fruit with developing spices of pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla. Gentle oak integration shows and supports the elegance and roundness at this early age. Very attractive now yet loads of development potential.
The vineyards are situated at DeMorgenzon in the Stellenboschkloof and were  planted in 2004 with trellises that are managed to ensure natural high acidity and full flavour concentration. The Syrah was manually harvested put into stainless steel fermentation tanks for fermentation with maceration on the skins to extract colour. After fermentation the wine was pressed off the skins and malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel. The wine spent a further 12 months in small French oak barrels, 3000L barrels and cement tanks (total 10% new wood).

DeMorgenzon is a rapidly rising star of Stellenbosch, the Estate positively bubbling with excitement, energy and ambition. Attention to detail and perfectionist standards have elevated DeMorgenzon’’s reputation since Hylton and Wendy Applebaum’’s acquisition of the estate in 2003.
Famous for their ‘Maestro’ blends and Reserve Chenin Blanc; since 2008 Baroque music has been piped into the vineyards all day, every day. The effects of sound and music on plant growth is an intriguing subject, the energy of the sound waves rather than the sounds themselves serving to stimulate and nurture the growing vines. A number of experiments have taken place to assess these claims and the effects and point towards an increase in vigour, root growth and general vine health. Music is also streamed throughout DeMorgenzon’’s cellars, surrounding the wines in rich sound waves.

Meaty casseroles are an ideal accompaniment to this wine.
