Intro to Beaune 1er Cru Couchereaux Jadot –
Beaune 1er Cru Couchereaux Jadot is a full ripe supple red wine.
Full tasting note and wine making –
This wine has a beautiful deep ruby colour. Because of its exceptional exposure to sunlight, this wine expresses strong aromas of ripe red fruits and also expresses good supple tannins. It is a structured, full and perfectly balanced wine.
Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the North, and Pommard to the South. There are no Grands Crus vineyards in this commune, but there are 36 Premiers Crus. A great part of the Beaune vineyards are located on the slopes and therefore a majority of them are rated in Premier Cru and “Les Couchereaux” is one of them. This Premier Cru rouge has a south exposure and the soil is clay and chalk with some alluvial soil on the surface. The soil is deep, well drained and warms up quickly.
With the exception of December the 2007/2008 winter was mild. April was cool but humid and summer arrived in May with sunny periods at the end of June and July. Rain then followed causing some disease in the vineyard and careful management was required for quality. At vintage the grapes were mature and after sorting the quality was obvious.
Fermentation takes place in open vats for three to four weeks, after which the wine is aged in barrels for 18 months before being bottled. This wine will easily age 12-15 years.
The Producer –
From the tip of Chablis to the toe of Beaujolais, from regional, village, 1er Cru and Grand Cru wines Louis Jadot produces only Burgundy. The Jadot label has become the reliable stamp of quality and consistency from what can often be a confusing region. Louis Henry Denis Jadot founded the business in 1859. His vision was to build a business with a high quality reputation and a significant vineyard base. This vision remains core to the business today.
Over time, prestigious acquisitions have included Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques. Plus the picturesque Santenay Clos de Malte and Premier Cru sites in Puligny Montrachet, Savigny Les Beaune and Corton Grand Cru to name but a few.
Today the business is headed up by Pierre Henry Gagey, following following the tragic death of Louis Auguste Jadot. Pierre Henry is a passionate believer in terroir, allowing the wines to present the very essence of Burgundy.
