Intro to Barbera d’Asti Ceppi Storici –

Barbera d’Asti Ceppi Storici from Piemonte in Italy is sourced from vines that are over forty years old, and has full spicy aromas and concentrated ripe cherry fruit balanced by pepper and spice.

Full tasting note and wine making –

The Ceppi Storici Barbera has warm, spicy aromas of blueberries and plums, with subtle, smoky notes. The palate is rich and generous with juicy cherry and lots of plum fruit, and there are meaty, spicy notes underlying these notes. Soft oak tannins offer an extra dimension to the texture. It comes from vineyards in the Monferrato hills in Asti in Piemonte. The fruit was hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks after which the wine is then aged in 50% French oak barrels and large traditional Piemonte oak vats for twelve months.

The producer –

Araldica who make this Barbera is Piemonte’s most progressive co-operative, situated in Castel Boglione, in the heart of Barbera d’Asti territory. Here they work with 230 grower members to source quality grapes and many joined the co-operative in the 1950s and have a long relationship with them. They produce wines from Piemonte’s main DOC / DOCG regions – predominantly Barbera, Gavi and Moscato, but also including Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero Arneis. All aspects of production, from grape selection through to vinification, maturation, blending and bottling are overseen by Araldica’s winemaking team of Claudio Manera, Lella Burdese and Carlo Manera. Production is twelve million bottles annually and the wines are exported to more than twenty countries worldwide.
As Claudio Manera states their aim is “to provide a range that is both understandable and accessible. Quite simply, wines that are for drinking and enjoying.”
