Intro to Barbeito Single Harvest 2004 Madeira –

Barbeito Single Harvest 2004 is from a single vineyard just outside Funchal, it has concentrated notes of fig, marmalade and molasses and a warm spicy mid-palate.

Full tasting note & wine making –

The aim with this Barbeito Single Harvest was to create medium dry Madeira of great purity and elegance, made from the Tinta Negra grape and to demonstrate that wines made from this grape and aged by the traditional Canteiro method can be very distinct. These wines are the result of a careful selection of grapes from vines of the north and south part of the island and after aging they select the best wines from casks and bottle.
Grapes from various quality vineyards from Estreito de Câmara de Lobos were used for this Barbeito Single Harvest Madeira. Grapes were pressed in a pneumatic press. Arresting of fermentation takes place at the desired degree of sweetness by adding alcohol. This wine was aged in casks of French oak in the traditional “canteiro” system. It was naturally aged in cask and bottled without the use of caramel.
It has very fine, delicate orange and lightly oxidised aromas and the palate has lovely finesse, with a real flood of tangerine fruit and a mediumweight, silky texture. The mid palate develops a coffeeish warmth and some spice with a delicate balance in the finish.

The producer –

Vinho Barbeito is one of the most forward-thinking companies on Madeira as well as being one of the youngest, being founded in the 1940’s by Mário Barbeito. When Mário died in 1985, the company was taken forward by his daughter, Dona Manuela de Freitas, whose two sons, Ricardo and Miguel joined the firm in 1991. Today, Ricardo is in day to day charge of Vinhos Barbeito, his mother having retired in the early 1990s, and his brother looking after other family business interests.
The company is now co-owned by a Japanese wine distributor called Kinoshita Shoji. Barbeito was the first Madeira producer to voluntarily switch all production to bottled wines in 1993. A few years ago Ricardo took the decision to eliminate the addition of caramel to the wines. Barbeito are attempting to redefine the popular notion of Madeira to a generally slightly drier, more food-oriented wine. As well as careful selection, long ageing and the absence of caramel, the wines are not de-acidified, so they retain much more freshness and tang than many Madeiras. At this level, Barbeito are leading the way in making complex, fine Madeiras as naturally as possible.

Makes a wonderful aperitif, especially when served with salted almonds , olives or nuggets of Parmesan cheese. It is also excellent when served with pate and foie-gras.
